Shanghai
These are a few snaps from my Shanghai trip last week. WordPress doesn’t seem to allow multiple galleries in a single post, so this will be a long one.
We stayed a stones throw from Nanjing Street which is amongst the prime market areas in Shanghai. A lot of neon advertising and beautiful lighting in the night.
On most days last week, the weather was quite bleak and overcast, but we got lucky one weekend with a lot of sunlight and cloudless blue skies.
Most of the greenery you see below is in a park near the shopping area of Fuyou.
Some buildings caught my eye while roaming about the city streets. The first one because of the rock-face to one side of it; the second and third ones are simply beautiful and the last one I’m quite proud of because of the way the photograph turned out despite the low light.
Fuyou is local marketplace around the center of the city which features more ‘traditional’ looking buildings. The place to go to if you want to buy touristy stuff and souvenirs.
We also dropped by Buddha Temple; like you would expect in temple-turned-tourist spot, money fleecing is the order of the day with ‘guided’ tours that strategically end up in overpriced souvenir shops.
The chinese have a thing for stone lions. You ll find them throughout the city at every other corner.
The Bund is another tourist attraction in Shanghai, quite like Marine Drive in Mumbai. It is a small stretch of the banks of the river Huangpu. Once nightfall sets in, the Bund is a beautiful place – a must visit place. Keep an eye out for the way the night sky appears in the long exposure pics, I suspect its because of the heavy artificial lighting in the city below. I especially liked the way the streetlights turned out in the pics, starlights! I ll let the photographs speak for themselves.
The Oriental Pearl, looking as majestic as ever.
The Yuyuan Garden is located in the heart of the city – right next to the markets around Fuyou. The garden has high wall around them, so you could walk right by them and never notice them(which we did once by the way). The garden is a Chinese style garden which basically means it was designed as a royal retreat for a king sometime in the 16th century. Unlike most other gardens, this one has little open spaces; every nook and cranny is used to grow bushes or is decorated by small jade rocks or is landscaped with small pools with goldfish and catfish in them.
Shanghai Ocean Aquarium, the 8th largest underwater aquarium in the world. Unfortunately, the lighting inside was very low, not enough for me keep the camera(or for that matter the subject) steady enough to shoot clear pics. Still, a worthwhile experience. The jellyfish were especially beautiful.
Some more pics I took around the city at night while searching an Indian restaurant. Shanghai at night reminds me a lot of Blade Runner – must be the heavy lighting around the city.

Nice photos! They make the place look really lively.

Some of these images are absolutely HAUNTING. Shanghai seems like such a dichotomy of old and new, stoic and vibrant, loud and soft…
So glad this was Freshly Pressed — love learning about places I’ll most likely never get to visit!

Thanks for bringing the other side of the world to my home. Some lovely pics. Am particularly partial to the night time ones that include some very strange skyscrapers and the criss-crossed building in shades of grey with the very green leaves nearer the camera – very nice picutre, that one. Many thanks again

November 12, 2011 at 12:47 AM
Yeah, that pic came out rather well. I think that partially because of the way the leaves are lit from behind.

Great post on Shanghai, it certainly brings back memories. I spent a year in Fudan University and totally enjoy it. There is another kind of stone lion that chinese like to place near their doors – It resembles a winged lion. They are known as Pixiu (貔貅)…Pi Xiu is also believe to be the ninth offspring of the dragon!

I couldn’t make it to Beijing, so I cant judge.

Haha, i dont know about the peng gash, but the traffic wasn’t all that bad. Come over to Mumbai once to see how much worse it could get!
Thanks

the food there is equally or more amazing as the scenery. =]

Aw heck, me and my colleagues purposely avoided all the traditional chinese food. Nothing is worse than an upset belly when you have just a week to explore a new place.
Should have given it a shot i guess.

Loved your pics – especially the reach for the sky one! And you’re using MY camera – the D3100 with kit lens!!
must visit hong kong some time.
Thanks for dropping by.
A quick question, how do you get all the EXIF data with the pics? Do it manually or is there a plugin for that?

I dont remember
. Most of the trees and bushes in Yuyuan Garden were labelled, but I never got around to cataloging them.

I’m back already and I’ve always been wary of such tours. I prefer to slug it out myself – get to know and explore a lot more of the city that way.
Thanks

Great photos! I was in Shanghai myself in September. I think it’s interesting how several of your photos are things I recognize and some are even almost the same pictures I took — Yu Garden, the Bund, World Financial Center — yet *many* others are things I never even saw. That city is huge!! Like that flat skyscraper outlined in neon — I missed that!
Great post and congrats on FP!

Thanks!
You re right about Shanghai being HUGE – these places are just the ones around Bund.
That funky skyscraper with the neon outline was my favorite building, after sun down nothing else compared to it. Its right on Nanjing street.

All the places on this planet are beautiful, but some are more beautiful than others. Your photo tour proves to me that Shanghai really really is the place to go to and return to.
– is it really gone, or you were just not interested in it?
I also like your photo/story highlights of the city, the things that you found interesting; I’m just thinking that something is missing: old town, like a „chinatown“

November 14, 2011 at 2:35 PM
Thanks!
. I think Xintiandi is the place to go to in Shanghai to see it. Even Beijing has a lot more of the ‘traditional’ China. I’d have loved to go there, but had precious little time in Shanghai.
Old Chinatown is still there dont worry
Ah well, next time for sure…

I tended to use slower shutter speeds than usual. So the sky looks a lot more ‘dynamic’, but you’re right, I sure was lucky with the weather. Glad you liked the pics!

Haha , the rock faced building with the construction is right by my house. You saw it while going to/coming from Jade Buddha Temple across from Changshou Lu Metro, yea? I really love all the purple lighting on the underside of the elevated highways! Great pics!
